Dia de los Muertos
Day of the dead is a two-day celebration in the Mexican culture, celebrating the lives of the people they know who have died. It is a happy holiday, and instead of mourning the person’s death, like we do in the American culture, they celebrate their life in a happy way. One of the things about the Mexican culture that this taught me was how family oriented they are. Family is a very high priority to the Mexican culture, and I actually really like that about them :).
For my altar and biography, I chose to honor my grandma Adele. The most important thing I learned from interviewing my dad about her was that she loved everyone around her, and for her, family always came first.

Para el Dia de los Muertos, yo escogí a mi abuelita para honorar, Adele Fine. Ella era le madre de mi papá, Mitch Fine. Ella creció durante la Gran Depreción, y ella vivió hasta los 73 años. Ella fue una viuda cuando tenía 42 años, y entonces ella tenía que cuidar a su familia sola. La conocí cuando era joven, y yo también era joven cuando ella murío, entonces yo siempre quería aprender mas sobre ella y su vida.
Mi abuelita Adele Fine tenía pelo Moreno y ojos cafés que siempre se miraba un poquite tristes, hasta cuando ella estaba feliz. Su nariz era larga y delgada, como su cara y su cuerpo. Ella siempre era muy generosa, tranquila, y chistosa a veces también. Mi papá dice que él se recuerda que ella y sus amigas siempre hacían trabajo de voluntad. Ella era generosa con su tiempo, y ella siempre quería ayudar a otras personas. Cuando ella tenía que limpiar su casa y ir a su trabajo, ella se quedaba tranquila con su familia, no se enojaba. Ella era chistosa también. Mi papá dice que cuando él era joven, él no creía que su madre era chistosa, pero cuando creció, él empazó a ver como de chistosa ella era. Mi papá dijó que su recuerdo favorito con su madre era cuando él tocaba el piano en su casa. Ella siempre amaba escuchar a la música que él tocaba, y lo hacía feliz y orgullosa de él.
Yo la extraño mucho, pero a veces cuando miro a mi hermano, yo pienso en ella. Mi hermano tiene sus ojos grandes y su cara redonda. Yo aprendí muchas cosas sobre mi abuelita, pero hay una cosa que es la mas importante. Esto era que ella quería mucho a su familia mas que todo, y eso me enseña amar a toda mi familia, mis amigos, y toda la gente yo conoscó.
Learning the preterit and imperfect tenses as well as conducting the interview really helped with my final biography because without learning those two past tenses, I would not have been able to properly write the biography, and if I hadn’t done the interview, I would not have learned a lot of the things I needed to know about my grandma.
